Since the end of the 1970’s, LARCO has invested in safeguarding the environment, for instance, by building a chimney 155m high to surpass the levels where temperature inversion occurs and by the creation of Europe’s longest conveyor belt, limiting the need for trucks in ore transportation, therefore reducing carbon emissions. In building on this heritage, we have devised and implemented a dynamic new Environmental Management System to demonstrate, in everyday practice, our commitment to environmental sustainability. Elements of the system include: - The identification and assessment of environmental impacts
- The publication of environmental reports prior to beginning operations.
- The continuous monitoring of air, the soil, and both surface and underground water quality
- The continuous evaluation of measurements
- The adoption of measures to mitigate negative environmental impacts
- The rehabilitation of mining sites, specifically, reforestation of affected areas
